[2011/10/02] 2011 J24 World Championship
Eric Faust the Executive Director of the International J/24 Class Association kindly sent us this message that we want to share with you all:
“From the International J/24 Class Association
The International J/24 Class is excited to once again hold its World Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Yacht Club Argentino has a reputation for providing top-quality race management, excellent sailing conditions and unmatched hospitality. We are confident that the 2011 World Championship will be an event to be remembered.
Due to the established rotation schedule for J/24 World Championships, this event has not been held in South America since 1997 when the sailing waters of Buenos Aires provided a memorable experience for the class. In that regatta a 50 year old Vince Brun captured his first J/24 World Championship on the way to an impressive string of sailing accomplishments. This year’s fleet boasts a number of former J/24 champions, but perhaps this will be the year that a new champion is crowned or a sailing dynasty is created.
The J/24 Class of Argentina has been a huge asset to the international class over the years and we greatly appreciate all their efforts in preparing for this regatta. The class organizers have been working hard to assure that charter boats have been made available and that they are well prepared. The measurement process will certainly run smoothly with this advance preparation. We are also particularly excited about the several new J/24s that will make their debut on the waters at this event!
The J/24 Class wishes all the competitors fair winds and the best of luck in the 2011 World Championship. Finally, we give our heartfelt thanks to all the organizers who have spent their time to host what we know will be a fantastic J/24 Championship.”

[2011/10/02] 2011 J24 World Championship
Two months before the J-24 World, the Argentinean fleet measured forces at the Luis Cerrato Championship organized by the Yacht Club Olivos.
The event was held on the 10th , 11th , 17th and 18th and the races were conducted by the International Race Officer Kiko Kundig, who will also be the IRO of the J-24 World's races.
Boats from Chile, Cordoba, Mar del Plata and Buenos Aires took part on the event. Conditions were very hard for the 23 participating boats. The first racing day the wind blew between 18 and 25 knots from the WNW with gusts of 28 knots, which caused many incidents and some capsizes. Fefe, helmed by Miguel Saubidet got two first places and a second place on the third race, which was won by the Joyita skippered by Matias Seguel from Chile.
Meanwhile, Audi skippered by Francisco Campero and Mormaii by Luis Cerrato got the second place in the first and second race respectively.
On Sunday the 11th, the wind blew between 7 and 12 knots from the North. Luca, helmed by Alejo Rigoni, Carrera, by Matias Pereira and Shark, by Alejandro Rossi, were the winners of three races of the day but the Fefe helmed by Miguel Saubidet and Audi by Francisco Campero continued leading the championship.
On Saturday the 17th, with South winds between 18 and 24 knots, the three scheduled races were completed. The Carrera from Matias Pereira took the first place in the first and third races and Francisco Campero with the Audi team won the second.
With three yachts with the same score, Carrera, Audi and Fefe, Sunday the 18th was the day of definitions.
Unlike the previous days the wind was very smooth and at times was less than 4 knots. On the other hand the wind shifted constantly and the race officer kept the fleet nearly three hours waiting for the conditions to improve.
A prueba de balas , helmed by Juan I. Grimaldi was the winner of the only race of the day, followed by Luca with Alejo Rigoni. The Audi was the only one who got a BFD though he discard it; Fefe and Carrera reached 9 and 11 respectively, leaving the Audi with Francisco Campero, Ezequiel Mendonca, Santiago Morixe, Lisandro Peralta and Diego Baialardo champions with 27 points. Second was the Carrera from Matias Pereira (28) followed by Fefe from Miguel Saubidet (29).
The first of October will start “Semana de Buenos Aires” and the J-24 Class will have its Argentinean Championship. See you there!!
